If you have allergies or asthma triggered by pet dander or dust mites, your physician or allergist has probably recommended that you wash your bedding in very hot water every week to reduce your exposure to these allergens. Normal laundering is a simple, inexpensive, and effective way of removing allergens such as dust mites and cat dander, according to a study in a recent issue of the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology.

Euan R. Tovey, PhD, and colleagues from Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Sydney, Australia and colleagues sought to determine what method of laundering would remove the most mite and cat allergen from bedding. Three studies were performed. The first compared combinations of four laundry agents (water alone, soap, detergent with enzymes, and detergent without enzymes), four temperatures (15°C, 25°C, 45°C, and 60°C), and three extraction times (5, 20, and 60 minutes).
The second study examined allergen extraction by 11 common brands of detergent at 25°C and 45°C for five minutes.

The third study compared four detergents containing enzymes before and after the denaturation of their enzymes.

The first study showed that detergents extracted more cat allergen and mite allergen than either soap or water alone and that almost all allergens were extracted within five minutes of washing at 25°C. However, washing at 60°C extracted slightly more cat allergen and reduced dust mite allergen, resulting in lower residual amounts of both allergens.

The second study showed all of the commercial brands of detergent tested performed similarly.
The third study showed that the presence or absence of enzymes in detergent formulations did not produce a significant effect on the extraction of allergens.

Researchers concluded that using detergent solutions at 25°C (77°F) for at least five minutes was sufficient to extract most dust mite and cat allergen from bedding.
