I went to Rockler Woodworking and Hardware in Houston TX on Sunday Jan 13, 2008.
Max Quenon the manager of store was kind enough to let me measure the air particulate created by a wood engraving / router machine using plywood.
This simple experiment took 15 minutes and demostrates why dust collecting equipment is important in a woodworking shop.
The OUTDOOR AIR in Houston Tx
Dylos Air Monitor Reading was 32 at >1 micron.
This means that there are 3,200 particles greater than 1 micron per cubic foot.
This is a very good air quality day for Houston TX. (Highway 59 @ Edloe / Buffalo Speedway area).
The INDOOR AIR QUALITY at Rockler Woodworking and Hardware Retail Store in Houston TX was reading 45.
This means that there are 4,500 particles greater than 1 micron per cubic foot in the air inside the store.
This shows that the indoor air quality is worst than the outdoor air.
The wood engraving / router equipment was enclosed in a clear plastic housing.
I measured the air coming out of a 2 inch circular hole. This would normally be connected to a vacuum hose. Here are the readings. The router equipment ran only 6 minutes.
| Time in minutes | @ >1.0 micron Readings | @ >5.0 micron Readings | |
| Start | 47 | 3 | Start the router / engraver / with plywood |
| 1 minute | 45 @>1.0 micron Reading | 1 @>5.0 micron Reading | |

| 6 | 144 | 23 | |
| 7 | 203 | 28 | The equipment / motor was turned off. |
| 8 | 351 | 41 | Bad Air Quality |
| 9 | 320 | 41 | Bad Air Quality |
| 10 minute | 583 @>1.0 micron Reading | 52 @>5.0 micron Reading | Bad Air Quality |
| Lung Damaging Dust Size
Particles are from 0.5 to 7.0 microns At this point there are 58,300 lung damaging dust size particles per cubic foot greater than 1.0 micron. At this point there are 5,200 lung damaging dust size particles per cubic foot greater than 5.0 micron. This test shows that your lungs can be exposed to plywood dust and the chemicals that are used to make the plywood. |

My testing shows that the Dylos 1 micron / 5 micron air monitor is best monitor to show air particulate in a woodwork shop.
By the way it is less expensive than the 0.5 micron Air Monitor.
